Vatican Unintentionally Tweets about Batman

Generally speaking, I try to keep religion off my radar and out of my mouth. It has almost been wholly replaced by Batman. I am partially joking, as I obviously cannot consider him a deity, but he’s very close to it based on how much faith I have in the character. Regardless, religion can exist alongside Batman, though you would never really hear those two concepts discussed within the same breath… but people find ways.

This week, the Vatican’s official Twitter account posted a tweet that had more than a few Catholics raising eyebrows, questioning whether or not the Twitter account had been hacked. To raise further confusion, Vatican officials initially believed the same thing. It turns out the explanation is not nearly as interesting as you would hope. The official Vatican website often grabs news posts from the Catholic News Service, one of which just happened to be a retrospective discussion piece on the Caped Crusader and like so many websites linked to Twitter accounts, the posting of said piece automatically tweeted the article.

Regardless, the piece itself is actually pretty thoughtful, well-researched, and interesting. I just don’t happen to agree with it. The article, entitled “Holy Switcheroo,” chronicles the fomenting of Batman from the Caped Crusader to the Dark Knight, pointing to the gradual shift from wholesome to darker, more violent storylines. It raises a few interesting points, but the fact of the matter is that the Batman in the comics is just not for kids and the writer just needs to understand that.

How do you feel about the article? Do you think Batman should return to his roots of being a Caped Crusader rather than a Dark Knight? Let me know.
