Margot Robbie on Harley Quinn’s Accent

With Suicide Squad filming fast approaching (shooting starts this April in Toronto), excitement and speculation have kicked into high gear. One of the biggest draws of this film, at least for comic book readers, is the silver screen debut of Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street).

But what will she sound like? Arleen Sorkin set the benchmark for the character’s voice when she blazed the trail on Batman: The Animated Series and though several actresses have portrayed her since and left their own mark (Hynden Walch and Tara Strong come to mind), they still have the connecting thread of Harley’s trademark “accent.” Who doesn’t hear it when they read the comics? The only incarnation that didn’t sound like the rest was the live action turn Mia Sara had on the short lived Birds of Prey TV series, but that’s a conversation for another day.

Here’s what Margot had to say when recently asked about the character’s signature accent:

“None of those things have been set in stone at this point, but according to the comics, she’s from New York and I think Brooklyn, so there may be a slight… I couldn’t imagine it would be as strong as the Wolf of Wall Street accent. The lingo will be the difference between that and the other character I played in ‘Wolf’ but I don’t know yet. We haven’t spoken about it.”

I think she will do just fine in the role. Not only is she an accomplished actress, but she just looks like Harley. I can’t wait to see her in costume.

Suicide Squad opens in theaters August 5, 2016.
