“Jerome” Returns to Gotham, Continues to Tease Joker

Jerome on Gotham

Cameron Monaghan, who played a chilling possible proto-Joker in Gotham‘s first season will be making a return for the show’s second year. While it’s never been made official that he would be portraying the character, showrunner Bruno Heller cited Monaghan’s first episode as the “beginning of the Joker saga.”

Monaghan himself has fueled the speculation fire by releasing this picture to instagram that heavily suggests his new role. Taking clear and welcome inspiration from The Man Who Laughs, Monaghan certainly looks the part… if that’s indeed the part he’ll be playing.

He tweeted the pic with the caption, “Life’s a bowl of cherries… but this is far from the pits. We’ve put a smile on your face haven’t we?”

Set photos have also been released, showing Jerome in a straightjacket and apparently threatening a school bus full of children with gasoline.

Nothing has been confirmed at this point, but Monaghan’s presence on the show is certainly building, at least that much is certain. Whether he’s the show’s Joker or just a red herring–or would that be laughing fish?–remains to be seen.
