Review: ‘Gotham’ S2E6: “By Fire”

Things in Gotham have never been darker in this week’s episode as the rise of its newest villain has all of the titular city worried. Elsewhere, Butch is recruited to be a mole inside Galavan’s organization and Galavan and his sister/wife has a nice little dinner date with Bruce and Silver.

When I said that things were dark in Gotham, I wasn’t kidding! When did this show get so damned violent? I might be spoiled by the lightheartedness of The Flash, Arrow, and most recently Supergirl, but this show is about as violent and dark as you can be on network television. I mean, the opening scene is Butch trying to convince Galavan to let him into his organization with his hand being cut off in last week’s episode, while some random guy is trying to prevent himself from being hung in the background.

There’s also an extremely uncomfortable domestic violence scene with Edward and Kringle. Which leads me to my biggest issue with these past couple of episodes. Basically, since the beginning of the season, the writers have tried to give Edward a love story, for whatever reason, with Ms. Kringle. The whole thing has been kind of weird since, ya know, Nigma killed her ex-boyfriend. Anyway, Nigma accidentally kills Kringle in this episode in a horrific domestic violence scene and, frankly, it was disgusting and I’m surprised that Fox would allow it. Other than that, the episode was fine, I guess. I’ll be honest, there isn’t much to this show that I find genuinely interesting and with that final scene, it just really left a bad taste in my mouth.

I have a hard time giving the episode a decent score when it had such a horrible “period” on the end. As I said, other than that incident, the episode was fine. The new Firefly was cool, even though she went 0-60 in about 10 seconds as far as her criminal life goes. I don’t know if I can take much more dark and dreariness from this show. I feel like I need to watch My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic after each episode of Gotham. Oh well, on to next week!
