Last week, Suicide Squad took over Empire magazine with some very colorful covers as well as some stills from the upcoming DC film. The Internet seemed receptive to the photos, but I’m sure there are still a ton of fans who still need convincing.
In that issue, David Ayer, the film’s director, tries his hand at persuading the masses. Executive Producer, Charles Roven explains that Ayer’s pitch impressed them. Ayer proceeds to elaborate on why exactly Suicide Squad will be a different kind of comic book movie.
You know, all these movies are about defeating the evil alien robot from f**king Planet X, before it destroys the world with its ticking clock. And who the f**k cares?But you do this story about struggle and isolation and people who have been sh*t on that suddenly get thrown this lifeline… that’s not so bad… I like to think of this as the Comic Book Movie 2.0″
The Suicide Squad title has always been different because it centers on villains or rather anti-heroes. Most of them aren’t necessarily inherently evil and a few of them are simply a product of circumstance. It’s great to see him so passionate about the characters and it’s pretty cool that he’s going to attempt to humanize them like that. Most great stories are born from writers seeking these characters’ humanity.
