A few days ago, we reported that the live-action drama series entitled Titans, based on the superhero team Teen Titans, was rejected by TNT. At the time, TNT Chief Creative Officer, Kevin Reilly, simply said, “We decided it wasn’t where we wanted to go.”
The following day, Reilly spoke with the Hollywood Reporter, in which he discussed the new direction for the channel and their sister company, TBS. The topic cropped up about show ownership and how TNT will begin focusing on shows owned by TNT, featuring less from WB. The reporter asked if that decision had anything to do with his decision to pass on Titans.
Reilly said:
“It wasn’t. Akiva [Goldsman] is a talented guy, [but] the script just wasn’t there. There is an unbelievable glut of superhero things in the market right now and if you have a really good one, clearly people are up for it. But I just don’t think that there’s a need for one that, for me, at least on paper didn’t seem to be screaming to get made.”
I don’t want to put words in his mouth like some journalists tend to do, but it seems like the overall decision was just based on quality, which means it likely was bad. Superhero shows are “in” at the moment, so it must not have been worth his time and effort at all.
With the CW doing so well with Arrow, The Flash, and the upcoming Legends of Tomorrow, there’s hope that Titans may crop up on that network instead. Personally, considering Berlanti and co.’s fantastic contribution to the superhero television presence, I say forget Titans, and let them do something with those characters.
