‘Batgirl’ To Start Production In 2018

Batgirl is coming.

It was announced a few months ago that director Joss Whedon was going to bring a solo Batgirl adventure to the big screen. Then came Zack Snyder’s unfortunate departure from Justice League, and the surprising announcement that Whedon would be taking over.

Still with me?

Now, “extensive” reshoots for the November blockbuster are underway and it’s safe to say that Whedon is tied up with that movie until the end of this year.

Have no worries, Batgirl is still on the slate. Don’t take my word for it. Here’s what DC films co-chairman Geoff Johns had to say to IGN about the upcoming movie.

“Batman is more than just Batman. It’s been way too long since we’ve seen an expansion of that universe. We are doing ‘Batgirl’ with Joss Whedon, it’s gonna be super exciting and he’s gonna start that next year. That’s just the start. We want to explore the Batman universe in a big new way.”

There you have it. Nobody has forgotten about Barbara Gordon. Warner Bros. is doing everything they can to make Justice League a great film, then they’re going to start focusing on these solo adventures. Not only are Johns’s comments encouraging to hear, but it gives exciting hope for the Batman universe in the future. We already know Chris McKay is in talks to bring Nightwing to the big screen, and a recent announcement spread the word that a Harley vs. Joker movie is also in the works.

Oh yeah, there’s also this Matt Reeves guy working on a solo Batman movie. No big deal.

Frankly, it’s all about Justice League for the rest of 2017. Before you know it, the calendar will turn to 2018, and it’ll be a whole new universe for Warner Bros. and DC.

And Batgirl will be in it.
