Since its inception back in 2014, Gotham has become known for its interesting takes on some of Batman’s most famous rogues. From the Penguin to the Riddler to Jerome “maybe-the-Joker” Valeska and everyone in between, the series has given new life to some classic villains who have maybe been mistreated on screen before. Some viewers may recall a certain Jonathan Crane who made an appearance all the way back in season one, although he hadn’t quite become the same Dr. Crane fans know and love in the comics. Oh boy, how that is about to change.
At the 2017 San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. premiered a trailer for the upcoming fourth season of Gotham which featured a nice little tease of whats in store…including an appearance by Jonathan Crane as The Scarecrow. You can check out the trailer below!
Scarecrow himself was – and arguably still remains – a very underrated Batman villain, but between Batman Begins and his inclusion in the Batman: Arkham games, Crane has risen to an all-time high in popularity. However, this version we see in the trailer above looks slightly different to his predecessors. In an interview with Cinema Blend, producer and writer John Stephens talked about the way Gotham will be presenting this classic rogue:
At the very beginning of the season, Penguin has solidified his control upon Gotham like never before. Where he’s kind of unionized crime. And Scarecrow comes in to basically reintroduce fear into Gotham and to remind people that the dark is still scary out there. And we’re really going to fashion, especially Episode 2, almost a horror movie episode where we really get to see Scarecrow. I think he’s like purely terrifying. Imagine, rather than the other versions of Scarecrow out there — because there are a lot of different versions — what if you just really tell Scarecrow as a horror movie? Because he could be scary as hell.
This idea of presenting Scarecrow like a horror movie is something that feels like a direct rip from the comics and is certainly something that will make this new season of Gotham a must-watch! Gotham Season Four kicks off on FOX starting on the new night of Thursday September 28, but until then make sure to keep your cowls directed towards Dark Knight News for all the latest updates!
