Batman is Finding Hope Again in ‘Justice League’

Ben Affleck discussed how Batman has grown as a character since Batman V Superman.

Batman the Lone Wolf

Affleck described Batman as being jaded and emotionally destitute in Batman V Superman. However, that all changed after the events of the film.

“In Batman V Superman, he was at the end of his rope. But in Justice League he’s finding hope again. He has to open up and play well with others. He knows he needs them.”

Now that he is trying to open up again to others, he is making attempts to build meaningful connections with the Justice League members. Affleck on working with other heroes:

“He’s sort of the ultimate loner, but he’s really trying to make it work and develop a good relationship with all of them. He might be a mentor to The Flash.”

It is interesting to hear Affleck describing Batman as “the ultimate loner” since it should be established DCEU canon that he had at least Robin and Nightwing as sidekicks. But, since Robin is dead in the DCEU, perhaps he has emotionally closed himself off to working with others, only to be inspired by Superman’s example.

Batman and Wonder Woman

At the end of BvS, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman have united to fight alongside each other against Doomsday. But with Superman’s death, Wonder Woman is the only current League member to have experience working with Batman. Here is Gal Gadot on her relationship with the Dark Knight:

“Since they’ve fought together, they know each other’s strengths. They also understand the hope Superman stood for, that was lost [when he died], so they feel that more than the others.”

The Wonder Woman/Batman relationship is probably the most intriguing of Justice League. Batman and Wonder Woman have firmly established themselves as colleagues unlike the other League members. The trailers indicate a very comfortable, even playful, rapport between the two.

Justice League will hit theaters November 17, 2017.
