When fans debate what the best Batman movie is, they usually hit on the usual suspects. Batman (1989), The Dark Knight or Batman Begins. However, there is one movie that many, myself included, believe stands above the rest. Whether it be animated or live-action, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm deserves its place in any conversation concerning which the best Batman movie ever made is.
As a part of Batman’s 80 year celebration, SYFY WIRE posted a new video with screenwriters Paul Dini and Alan Burnett along with co-director Eric Radomski to talk about the story behind the making of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. It’s a great video and well worth your time for a little behind the scenes look at one of the best Batman stories of all time. Check it out:
Mask of the Phantasm is an animated feature that takes place within the universe of Batman: The Animated Series. Most animated films are given a few years to come together, but The Animated Series team were tasked with creating an animated movie in less than a year and, unfortunately, due to poor marketing by Warner Bros. their movie flopped hard at the box office during Christmas 1993.
Once it made its way to home video, however, is when fans realized what an amazing Batman story they missed out on. Film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert even apologized for not reviewing it when it was in theaters when they finally got a copy of it.
