James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ will Reportedly Film in Georgia in September

A few bits of casting news for James Gunn’s upcoming The Suicide Squad seem to be popping up. The most recent of which saw A Wrinkle in Time‘s Storm Reid in negotiations to play Idris Elba’s daughter in the flick. She joins a few returning stars and a few new ones like David Dastmalchian and John Cena. (I wonder if we’d physically be able to see him in the movie.) Unfortunately, WB themselves have been fairly tight-lipped, not really commenting or revealing anything themselves beyond the movie’s writer/director, James Gunn. Therefore, whatever we get from the Internet is sort of all we have. Another piece of unconfirmed news says that The Suicide Squad will head to Georgia in September to film.

The studio is apparently one that Gunn is familiar with. The Pinewood Atlanta Studios is reportedly the shooting location for The Suicide Squad. It is the same location where Gunn shot Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. HN Entertainment broke this scoop, saying that the director is also expected to return to the same studio for GotG Vol. 3.

Creative freedom or really good tax incentives?

As of now, there has been no confirmation from WB, as expected, so we’re left to wander around in a sea of salt lest some bad rumor slugs come and get us. (Yeah, I’m scraping at the bottom of the barrel for new metaphors.) I guess for the time being, we should just cautiously believe that Gunn will shoot The Suicide Squad in Georgia in September.

While GotG Vol. 2 did feature some pretty spectacular sets, most notably Ego’s planet and the Sovereign throne room, but let’s be honest, a lot of was likely green screen and post-prod CGI. However, what I’m gathering from this is that WB is giving Gunn the freedom he wants to make a good movie. While it’s likely due to really good tax incentives in Georgia, it’s still pretty cool that Gunn is calling the shots and going back to a studio he’s worked in previously.

The Suicide Squad will hit theatres on Aug. 6, 2021. Stay tuned to DKN for more updates.
